Thinking about trying Proxmox though once my VMware licenses come up for renewal.Īs an aside the most trouble free, zero maintenance server in my home lab is the Windows Server. * Zabbix (SNMP/IPMI/Server monitoring server - amazing product but a PITA to setup) * Windows Server (DNS, DHCP, file serving) * Synology (user facing file serving duties) * FreeNAS (server facing file server duties) * JIRA / Confluence (managing tickets and wiki) I also use certbot with LetsEncrypt for SSL certs.Running similar setups on my home lab and company lab: MariaDB: dnf install -y mariadb mariadb-serverįirewallD basic rules for HTTP/HTTPS: firewall-cmd -zone=public -add-service=http -permanentįirewall-cmd -zone=public -add-service=https -permanent PHP packages I needed: dnf install -y php php-gd php-mbstring php-intl php-bcmath php-gmp php-process php-pecl-apcu ![]() This isn't a guide, just a few notes I took to remind me in case I do it again. In case it's of any help to someone, here are my notes from my clean install. It works so well, especially sharing stuff with my family members in the same household. In hindsight I wish I had used a Docker container instead, but old habits stick! I run containers for a few other things (like PhotoPrism) so I might have to explore migrating it all to a container based solution soon. One month later it is still stable and working as expected. It had been upgraded over and over since Nextcloud version 10, so I created a fresh VM running CentOS 8, created a larger 4TB NAS volume to back it with, and started syncing again. ![]() So after that issue, I decided to delete the Nextcloud VM and start over. The iOS Nextcloud app works really well, and it's so convenient if I need to open files on an iOS device from ebooks, comics, password DB, PDF files, etc. Also, they didn't solve my note taking (1Writer uses WebDav). I tried Resilio Sync as that allowed me to access files from my iOS device, but then I would have to use both SyncThing and Resilio Sync to achieve what I wanted. I still use SyncThing for my large projects (video and audio), but the reason I didn't keep it as a replacement for Nextcloud was the inability to auto-upload photos from my iOS devices, or access files on mobile devices (such as my Keepass DB). I also rely on Nextcloud to synchronize my local Keepass database, using Strongbox on my iOS devices (I just have to manually update every now and then). I use 1Writer on my iOS devices for notes which simply syncs with a Notes directory in Nextcloud. Over the years I really begun to rely on the photo auto-upload feature. I restored it to a new folder, then thought I'd try SyncThing instead to sync it to other devices including another CentOS VM backed by the NAS. I don't want to make a big deal of that issue, and honestly the urgency was about keeping my data. It was something storage IO related though. I still can't rule out it being something else. I hadn't heard of this issue before, but it was the first major issue I had. I was getting lots of errors trying to re-sync, so in the end I un-installed Nextcloud and all was well again. Then one day my Nextcloud folder was empty, but luckily I had a local USB backup. I never dug too deep into it, but Windows kept blue-screening, Firefox kept crashing at random times, and other software too. My first install lasted around 4 years, until I had an unusual problem with my Windows 10 PC. Around 1 year ago I decided to remove external access to it, so other than VPN (on my pfSense router) it cannot be access externally. Storage is backed by an old QNAP NAS with 6 x 3TB drives (RAID10). I've been running it on CentOS (currently CentOS 8) in a VMware virtual machine in my home lab. I wanted to de-Google my life, and have more control on where my personal data is stored, secured, Back then it wasn't about privacy, but ultimately it became very much about that.īack to Nextcloud. ![]() It actually began 7 years and 5 months ago when I first installed ownCloud. ![]() TLDR: My experience running Nextcloud in a VMware virtual machine, and why other solutions like SyncThing and Resilio Sync didn't work for me.
